No X-ray examinations using contrasting agents should have been carried out in the eight days prior to the examination.
The bone density test is an X-ray method for measuring the bone density in the area of the spine, hip and thigh. The examination is low in radiation, completely pain-free and only lasts a few minutes.
The DEXA scan is the best-studied method for bone density measurement. It also forms the diagnostic basis for the World Health Organization’s (WHO)osteoporosis classification. To be able to give a clear diagnosis of “osteoporosis“ (bone loss) with all the therapeutic repercussions,X-ray or DEXA findings are needed.
Women are especially affected by osteoporosis
One in four women over the age of 50 suffers from osteoporosis – often without even realising it. Once women reach menopause, bone density reduces due to the declining concentration of female hormones. The risk also increases if other risk factors are present such as hereditary predisposition, smoking, being underweight or long-term medication containing cortisone. Osteoporosis is one of the main risk factors for broken bones and spinal curvatures in old age.
By detecting bone loss early using a bone density scan, it can be counteracted therapeutically and/or medicinally with good results. All women aged 65 and above should have a regular bone density test and, if there are risk factors present, as early as 50 years of age (which also applies to men).
Who carries the costs for bone density measurement?
The costs for the Osteoporosis screening are usually not covered by state health insurance. We are happy to advise you on the matter. Private health insurance covers the costs for breast cancer screening.
